About Us
The Virginia Retina Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the early detection and timely treatment of diabetic eye disease.
Established in 2002 by Joseph J. Timmes, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S., former Chief of Ophthalmology at Inova Fairfax Hospital, the foundation’s mission is to educate and motivate people with diabetes to have annual dilated eye examinations.

Dr. Timmes
Dr. Timmes is a retina specialist in private practice in Fairfax, Virginia. Dr. Timmes has been practicing medicine in Fairfax since 1975. He served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Inova Fairfax Hospital from 1994 to 2001.
He is board certified, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a past President of the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology and holds the faculty position of Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Georgetown University.
Dr. Timmes received his bachelors degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed his post-graduate training in ophthalmology at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. and the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Timmes and his wife Kitty reside in Vienna, Virginia. Dr. and Mrs. Timmes are devoted to their beagle Andy and their toy poodle Shayna, either of whom can often be seen in the office. When he isn’t treating patients, Dr. Timmes can be found at the gym or on the golf course. He is an avid sports fan who roots for Notre Dame and the Redskins.
