Did you know that up to 90% of diabetic blindness could be prevented by having an annual dilated eye examination?

The Virginia Retina Foundation is dedicated to saving vision by the early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
Established by Joseph J. Timmes, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S., former Chief of Ophthalmology at Inova Fairfax Hospital, the Foundation’s original mission was to raise public awareness of age-related macular degeneration. The Foundation is now shifting its focus to reach out to all adults with diabetes.
Our goal is to educate and motivate everyone with diabetes to have a dilated eye examination each year, even if their eyesight is fine. Your eye doctor can detect diabetic eye disease before you notice any problems with your sight.
Proven, effective treatments are available, but early detection is important in order to have the best opportunity to preserve your vision.
